Subject: 2nd reality
So know I've read all about 2nd Reality, and my GUS is going to have a
full meg of DRAM within the next week or so. So, how am I supposed to
get a copy of this demo? I have had no luck ftp'ing to epas -- the zip
files I get from there always have errors (problems with network lines
crossing the border?). Anyway, I looked on both the other sites
(wuarchive and orst) and it lists the two zip files, but says they are 0
bytes. Anyone have any ideas how I'm supposed to get this demo?

Subject: ADPCM files
The ADPCM 4:1 compressed files are quite interesting, but how about some files
that demonstrate MPEG compression? I hear MPEG can compress audio files by
around 10:1. Could the person with the Toshiba 3401 (& CDDAREAD program)
upload a few (smaller) MPEG-compressed files?
If MPEG doesn't degrade the audio fidelity too much, than it could be the
sound-compression standard of the 90s. I remember seeing X-Ing's MPEG audio-
decoder (Windows based) on wuarchive.wustl.edu under /pub/msdos_uploads/

Subject: AVI and GUS Drivers...
Hi!
I have a question about the capabilities of the Windows
Drivers of our wonderful Ultrasound Card:
------> Are WE going to have more reliable drivers?
We have some programs wich have digitized sound effect
delays; it takes 5 to 10 seconds more to load windows (even if
we unload SBOS before...); and now I HAVE a problem with the
new media player and the video for windows (and I hope and I'm
sure that I'm not the only one...): when I want to play an AVI
file, The sound is really perfect BUT the video stops every
0.5 to 1 second. It's not the fault of my computer or my
graphic card (486 DX/33, IDE/VLB, ATI GRAPHICS ULTRA PLUS).
So, how can I get rid of this???? I tested this with the sound
blaster Windows Driver (ie I have a sound blaster too) and it
works fine... So, the problem comes from the Ultrasound
Windows Drivers!!
Any comments??? Suggestions??? JOHN!!!! WHAT CAN I DO??????
Thanx in advance.
Xavier Rustom.

Subject: CD-Rom drives
I'm looking into getting a CD-ROM drive for my computer. I have:
486DX-50
8 Meg RAm
240 meg IDE hd
GUS with 1024K
SVGA card w/1024K
THe big problem is that my computer is IDE, not SCSI. I have several slots open
so I don't mind using a few, but I would prefer to use a GUS CDROM daughtercard.
Which CD-ROM drives are the best deals-best performance at the lowest price?
Thanx in advance.

There are three reasons that I know of that you might want to do this. One is
if you get a CD that does not come with an interface card (most likely SCSI,
since CDs with other interfaces usually supply the board), and the GUS
daughterboard is cheaper than an interface. Two is if you are out of slots on
your motherboard (the GUS Db does not take an extra slot). Three is that you
want a nice package with all the right audio cables.
Even for case 1, I think the db does not use a particularly fast scsi, so you
would only want to get the db if you were not planning to use scsi for anything
else. And in terms of the audio cables, you can buy the cables for under $20
from CD-ROM Access in Los Altos CA, or you can build them yourself quite easily.
>2) Is there anyone out there using a cdrom drive with both gus and os2?
>(Ok, I know os/2 and gus are not getting along right now, I will be happy

I don't know OS/2, but a popular drive is the Mitsumi LU005. It is compabitle
with all the standards, including photo-cd, multisession. Mitsumi used to have
a bad rep because of slow access, but the latest versions have "respectable" if
not great access at about 350ms. Actually, I think there is a new version out
which does double-speed. These drives are quite inexpensive ($250-ish. Don't
quote me), but work fine. They seem to have saved money on the CD eject
mechanism. They are non-caddy models, and totally manual. You push on the
drive, and it unlatches. You pull it out, open the top and lift out the cd.
I assume that there are Mitsumi drivers for OS/2, but as I say, I don't know. I
use my LU005 with the Grolier Encyclopedia with no problem. (Video is a bit
jerky, but I took that to be because of the single-speed nature of the drive).
I hope this helps.

In the beginning, I managed to get the demo to work with Ultramid
occasionally, other times, the system would hang everytime ultramid
was loaded. Then I noticed that the version of Ultramid that comes
with the demo is only about 16k, whereas other versions of Ultramid
are about 30k. So I copied Ultramid v1.03 from my Sierra games
directory and used it with the Rampage demo, and *presto* everything
works fine, every time.
I guess that Bethesda Software got the programmers at
Gravis/Forte to trim the Ultramid code down a little bit, and in the
process something got screwed up.
BTW, I do NOT use the "-c" switch to get the game to work.
Apparently, it supports patch caching.

Subject: Elements demo
Has anyone gotten this to run? I got the (corrected) version off epas,
unzipped it and gave it a shot and it complained that the PC was already in
PROTECTED MODE (it's caps, not mine) and then told me to boot with no EMM
but HIMEM-driver (XMS) (again, it's wording). So I hacked things up to get
QEMM to give no EMS but finally had to resort to HIMEM.SYS (ugh!). Still no
joy, since it wants 586K (+/-) WITHOUT UMBs to load things into...
So, is it be worth the trouble to get it to run (he asked, remembering Hex
Appeal, which certainly wasn't)?? And why, oh why, does a demo that wins
3rd place at Assembly '93 not "play nice" with a normal PC configuration??

Advanced Gravis trades under the symbol AED, in the Toronto
stock exchange.
It closed at $4.10 yesterday. I'm thinking of getting a few
shares myself. The guys at Gravis seems to be on the ball, and
things are looking good ...

I am presently using the fix for Flight Sim 5.0 but the sound is still
choppy and the flaps sounds are not available. Is there a new SBOS that
is available to use with Fltsim5?

It even came with a printed spiral bound manual with new stuff for USS8 too.
Nice job Gravis....

Yeah I know this subject has been murdered on this list before. The problem is
that since I didn't have the game I didn't bother reading the messages. I have
the patch from epas, and I load it after sbos and before the game. I've tried
the latest version of SBOS (I believe) and 1.02, I think, and both of them
cause my computer to lock up before I even enter the game. I use address 240,
DMA 1, IRQ 5 (or the other way around?). Anyways, any help would be
appreciated.

Subject: The Ultrasound, of course!
Hi, I've just recently figured out how to send mail via
internet! I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about OS/2
support for the gravis ultrasound. I've read that they are working on
it, but that's old news! I've had this sound card for at least a year
or so, and I am getting so frustrated!!! Furthermore, I don't know
where to get patches so that my games use ultrasound (though I did get
the syndicate and dune II patches). Anyways, does anyone have any idea
where I can get patches for games to get great sound? Does anyone know
WHEN OS/2 support will be around??? HELP!!!

Subject: Where's *my* disks?
I never thought I'd be asking this, but I bought my GUS in June/July and it
had the old disks. I downloaded the new ones and that's fine, except I
still haven't gotten the ones that should come from Gravis that have the
commercial software on them (ie. cakewalk). Is another shipment going out?
Who do I send to check my address and name?
Thanks a bunch!

help me.
